Asian residents comprise a plurality at fifty-seven percent of Union City's population; Hispanic, white, and Black residents make up twenty-two percent, eleven percent and four percent respectively.

The city has seen steady population growth from its incorporation in 1959, when Alvarado and Decoto combined to form the municipality. This expansion reflects the broader East Bay narrative: affordable housing relative to San Francisco and San Jose, access to public transit, and a welcoming climate for families seeking to establish themselves in the Bay Area.
